Are You a “Protected” Consumer? Get Ready for a Major Change in How You Pay for Electricity

Pakistan’s government is looking into a potential game-changer for millions of electricity users. There’s a proposal on the table to increase the “protected” consumer limit from 200 units to 300 units. This idea came up after some politicians pointed out a massive problem to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. They explained that families who use just 201 units of electricity are hit with a sudden, huge tariff jump that adds an extra Rs. 5,000 to their bill, which they called completely unfair.

If this new plan gets the green light, it means that the super high-cost electricity tariff would only kick in for those who use more than 300 units. This change could bring much-needed financial breathing room to a huge number of middle-class households. Right now, a special committee is being put together to take a close look at the different consumer categories and will recommend a new limit. The hope is to find a solution that helps everyday people without overburdening the system.
