In a significant move to make banking more accessible and convenient for everyone, from individuals to bustling businesses, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has rolled out a new, simplified framework. This isn’t just about opening accounts; it’s about pushing Pakistan further into the digital age of finance, making transactions smoother and more secure for millions.

What’s Changing with Bank Accounts?

The SBP has introduced a streamlined, standardized approach for opening bank accounts across all banks and regulated financial institutions. The goal is clear: less hassle, more transparency, and faster service.

Here’s what this means for you:

  • Simpler Process, Less Paperwork: Forget about mountains of documents. The SBP has significantly cut down on the paperwork needed to open an account, making the process much easier to navigate.
  • Speedy Account Opening: Banks are now instructed to open accounts for the general public within just two days. This is a huge shift, cutting down on the waiting time that often discourages people from getting banked.
  • Track Your Application: For the first time, customers will be able to track the status of their account applications. This adds a much-needed layer of transparency and keeps you informed every step of the way, making the process truly customer-friendly.
  • Go Fully Digital: One of the most exciting changes is the ability to open all types of bank accounts digitally. This means you can complete the entire process online, without needing to visit a branch, further enhancing convenience and accessibility.

These measures are a continuation of SBP’s ongoing efforts to boost financial inclusion across the country, building on previous initiatives like branchless banking accounts, Asaan accounts (simplified accounts for underserved segments), digital onboarding, and specialized accounts for freelancers, those receiving remittances from abroad, and overseas Pakistanis.

Pushing Digital Payments for Businesses

Beyond individual accounts, the SBP is also making a strong push to digitize payments for businesses. They’ve told banks and financial institutions to provide solutions for businesses to accept digital payments, whether they operate in a physical store or online.

  • Digital Payment Acceptance for All: Both new and existing merchants are now encouraged to adopt at least one digital payment solution. This includes options like Raast QR codes, Point-of-Sale (POS) machines, and e-commerce/Raast checkout options. This makes it easier for customers to pay digitally for their purchases.
  • Support for Small Merchants: To really get small businesses on board, the SBP has advised financial institutions to categorize merchants as micro, small, and registered merchants. This will help tailor low-cost digital payment acceptance points specifically for smaller businesses, making it more affordable for them to embrace digital payments.

These new initiatives by the SBP are set to create a much better banking environment in Pakistan. They aim to bring more unbanked individuals and businesses into the formal banking system, moving away from a largely cash-based economy.
