Big News for Lahore Trams Hit the Streets Next February

Get ready for a big change in how Lahore gets around. The Punjab government just confirmed that the city’s new tram service is all set to begin operations in February 2026.

According to Punjab’s Transport Minister, Bilal Akbar, the trial runs for the tram were a success. The first route will connect Thokar all the way to Harbanspura, which should be a huge help for commuters on that line.

So, what’s it like? Each tram can hold about 270 people, and the project has a price tag of $3 million. The minister also mentioned that key officials from Punjab NESPAK and the PMA even traveled to China to help get this project on track.

And it looks like Lahore isn’t the only city getting a public transport upgrade. Bilal Akbar shared that plans for new metro train systems in Faisalabad and Gujranwala have also been approved. The Faisalabad metro is a major project, expected to handle around 300,000 riders every day with a budget of $110 million. Gujranwala’s metro will be built to serve about 140,000 daily commuters, costing around $50 million.

Why all these new projects? The minister pointed out something every Lahori knows: the air pollution from all the bikes and cars is a serious problem. The hope is that by giving people a better, cleaner option like the tram and metro, more people will leave their vehicles at home. This could be a big step toward cleaner air for everyone.
