Punjab’s Bold New Strategy: A Dedicated Ministry to Combat Soaring Prices

In a decisive move aimed at providing much-needed relief to its citizens, the Punjab administration has taken a significant step towards reinforcing its supervision of daily necessities. They have officially resolved to form a specialized ministry solely focused on price regulation.

During its latest session, the Punjab Assembly overwhelmingly endorsed the “Punjab Price Regulation of Vital Goods (Amendment) Bill 2025.” This recently enacted legislation introduces crucial modifications to the previous 2024 Act, with the primary objective of fortifying and enhancing the efficacy of the province’s existing price management framework. A standout provision of this amendment is the establishment of a “Price Oversight Board.” This influential body will be headed by either the designated Minister for Price Regulation or another public representative chosen by the Chief Minister.

The newly formed board is designed for balanced and informed decision-making, ensuring equal participation from both specialized experts and relevant stakeholders. Each of these groups will contribute three representatives.

The revised legislation is set to become active once it receives final assent from the Governor of Punjab. This proactive undertaking is specifically engineered to rein in inflationary pressures, deter artificial cost escalations, and deliver substantial financial ease to the general populace.
