What is a ‘Cloudburst’? The Freak Weather That Caused Kashmir’s Deadly Flood.

A spiritual journey in Indian-administered Kashmir turned into a scene of horror after an incredibly intense burst of rain triggered a massive flash flood, highlighting the growing danger of extreme weather in the Himalayas.

The disaster struck the town of Chashoti, a popular resting spot for Hindu pilgrims. As of now, officials have confirmed that at least 46 people have lost their lives. In a desperate race against time, rescue teams are searching for more than 200 others who are still missing.

Videos posted on social media show the terrifying moment the flood hit, with a huge wave of mud, water, and debris roaring down the mountain. The deluge instantly turned roads into raging torrents, destroying entire buildings and sweeping away vehicles.

Rescue operations are in full swing, with the army and local police working tirelessly to locate the missing. The region’s Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, described the news as “grim & accurate” and confirmed that all possible resources are being mobilized for the rescue effort. In light of the tragedy, some events planned for India’s Independence Day on Friday have been cancelled.

Weather experts explained that the disaster was caused by a “cloudburst,” which is a rare and sudden downpour of an enormous amount of rain in less than an hour. In mountainous regions, this can unleash devastating landslides and floods with no warning.

According to one report, the flood completely washed away a community kitchen just as a large number of pilgrims had gathered for lunch, sweeping them away in the sudden surge. The rescued survivors are being moved to nearby hospitals for treatment
