Your Trash Could Soon Cost You Big Bucks in Islamabad
Big changes are coming to how Islamabad handles its trash. If you live in the capital, get ready for a whole new system for waste collection, complete with new rules and, yes, fines if you’re caught littering.
The decision came straight from the top after a major meeting at the Capital Development Authority (CDA) headquarters on Friday, led by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa. It seems the leadership is determined to get the city’s cleanliness up to a much higher standard.
So, what’s actually changing?
For starters, the city is being split into two main zones for the cleanup effort: one for the urban sectors and another for the surrounding rural areas. To make this all happen, the CDA is looking to hire top-notch waste management companies, both from Pakistan and abroad. The chairman was clear that the hiring process must be fair and competitive to get the best companies for the job.
You’ll also start seeing new types of bins around. Homes will get a two-bin system to help separate waste right at the source. Shops and commercial areas will get a three-bin system after a quick study is done to figure out the best way to roll it out.
And here’s the part you’ll really want to pay attention to: the CDA is bringing in fines for littering. Dropping a wrapper on the street could soon hit you in the wallet. This is part of a bigger push to make sure the new rules are actually followed.
The plan also includes some smarter infrastructure. A special facility is being set up to sort through all the collected waste, and there will even be a central control room to monitor the entire system live. They’re also borrowing good ideas that have worked in Punjab and other provinces to make sure Islamabad’s model is effective.
The message from the top is clear: this needs to happen fast. The chairman stressed that the people of Islamabad deserve a clean city, and it’s the CDA’s job to deliver that without any more delays.
